The collection consists of records of the Sidney Lanier Chapter (Macon, Ga.) of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) from 1896-1980. The records include materials relating to the Lanier Chapter; the Sidney Chapter of the Children of the Confederacy; the UDC Georgia Division; and the national UDC. Materials documenting the Lanier Chapter include minutes (1955-1959); histories of the chapter (1896-1926); scrapbooks concerning Confederate Memorial Day in Macon (1866-1959), the Confederate Veterans Reunion in Macon (1911), the visits of Jefferson Davis to Macon, and the life and career of Dorothy Blount Lamar; reminiscences about the Civil War by people in Jones, Bibb and Crawford counties, the rosters and history of Macon Civil War companies including the Macon Volunteers and Floyd Rifles (2nd Georgia Infantry Battalion), speeches, and yearbooks (1940-1979). Records documenting the Lanier Chapter of the Children of the Confederacy consist almost entirely of membership applications filed by veterans' name. The Georgia Division records contain convention minutes (1939-1978, with gaps), and programs (1915-1972, with gaps). The national UDC records include printed material and essays, some written by Macon members.

The Southern Cross of Honor award, which later became the Cross of Military Service, originated on Oct. 13, 1862 as an act of the Confederate Congress to recognize the courage and good conduct of officers, non-commissioned officers and privates of the Confederate army.
